Eastern European Railways

Journey from Salzburg to Prague was interesting. Austrian trains good. Border police jump on at the Czech border looking like they've just walked out of a Bond film (no disrespect meant). Czech trains also good. Helpful guards who make you get back on the train when you get off at the wrong station (cos all the signs are in Czech).

Prague very friendly. Everyone either speaks enough English or has good enough hand gestures to get by.

Jewish Quarter really interesting and very moving. Pinkas Synagogue now a memorial to Bohemian and Movarian Jewish victims of the holocaust. The walls inside are filled with 77,297 names and their dates. And upstairs, a display of children's artwork done during the 1940s by the Jewish children living in the ghetto. Almost unbearably poignant. Some drew ships sailing to Palestine - their idea of what paradise would be.

Outside the very famous Jewish cemetery. 12,000 gravestone cramed together dating from 1430s to 1780's. Buried up to 12 deep.

St George quite big here. Apparently, he was from these parts and (I didn't know this) served in the Roman Army and died in 303AD. So how did England end up with him?
