First week
I had a little nostalgic visit to my blog from 1st year the other day. It seems like a long time ago, and yet the time has passed surprisingly quickly.
5th year has been busy so far. The aim is to shadow the F1 (i.e. 1st year) doctors in readiness for next year. I've been attached to a vascular surgeon's firm (i.e. team). However, the consultant goes on holiday next week and the registrar and SHO are rotating on from Monday, so it will just be me and the F1 for a while. My patient contact on the ward has been a bit limited to sticking needles into people who are already in pain so I did a medical on-call last night. Incidentally, it's ironic to note that we spend 3rd and 4th year chasing around the hospital looking for people on whom to practice taking blood and putting in cannulas and then all of a sudden 5th year comes round and that's all we seem to do. But I'm glad of the practice.
Anyway, the on-call was quite interesting. I took an hour to clerk in a patient, which possibly shows that I haven't done it for 3 months (in my defence, very few patients in Uganda spoke English). Then I went to my first ever crash call, which was probably a very important experience for me.
Grimsby is ok. The accommodation has new carpets, a new kitchen and new showers. The excitement with which this discovery was made on Sunday night cannot be overstated. Applications for jobs have opened, so I am in the process of choosing which part of the country I want to be in for the next two years starting from August.
What else? Not much. Oh, except, Ian, if you read this, go and see Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs at the cinema. And take Ric. And preferably wait till I'm there to see it again too. It may be that I watched it shortly after an 8 hour bus journey to Kampala, but I was convinced it was the funniest thing I'd seen in ages.
