I'm training to be a doctor and they make me read about interbreeding between neighbouring baboon populations in Africa.
Although it's actually surprisingly fascinating.
Some more facts about Neanderthals. Prepare to be dazzled.
They weren't so brutish as is perceived. They burried their dead with ceremony, had some kind of lanuage and even made musical instruments; although we're probably not talking Stradivari. Because they only lived in Europe, some people think they all had blond hair and blue eyes (can you see where this is going?) and thus may have contributed to that feature in those of us blessed enough to be so endowed. However, most people believe they contributed exactly zero DNA to the modern human race.
Ugg.

I saw a documentary today about fossils and how it was apparently our starting to walk on two legs, not our brains beginning to grow that secured our progression to the next stages of our evolution, the brain came later. Weird but we are the only bipedal mammals ever...apparently ;-)
